About the Moodle App

Our Warwick-branded version of the Moodle app is designed to make it easier to stay up to date and participate in your learning wherever you are.

  • Quick access to your courses and resources

  • Instant notifications for messages, announcements, and deadlines

  • Offline access to downloaded materials

  • Easy submissions for assignments, forums, and basic quizzes

  • Built-in calendar to track events and due dates

  • Optimised design for smaller screens and mobile data use

You cannot view lecture captures or reading lists via the Moodle Mobile App.

Getting Started

  • Download the app from the relevant store
  • Open the App.
  • Sign in with your University credentials.

On first use, and when you navigate to new sections of Moodle, you will see a set of 'user tour' pop-ups. You can follow these or close them if you are confident in your use and navigation of Moodle.

Before going offline, open the course sections or activities you’ll need — the app will automatically cache them for use later.

How-tos

Choosing when to - and not to - use the Moodle mobile app

Some features of Moodle courses may not be compatible with the app.

Web browser

The following activities are best carried out on your computer or mobile web browser.

  • Accessing Lecture Capture & Reading Lists - these blocks (in the block drawer on the right-hand side of the course page) do not appear in the Moodle app.
  • Taking quizzes or exams - some question types might not be compatible with the app, and some questions with rich media would be better viewed on a larger screen.
  • Submitting assignments - while it is possible to submit assignments via the app, large file uploads or complex submission formats are often more reliable via a desktop browser.
  • Viewing some types of embedded content - your tutors might make use of interactive (H5P) content in your courses. These may not always display in the mobile app.
  • Reading long documents or watching long videos - using smaller devices can cause eye strain so are best viewed on larger screens.
Whilst it may not be immediately obvious, some 'non-core' features and activities are add-ons to Moodle and may sometimes not work or may open in your device's web browser rather than directly in the app.

Mobile App

Sometimes convenience wins over features and the app excels at this.

  • Access Moodle on the go - the app is optimised for small screens and quick loading, making it easier to use on a phone than the browser version. Ideal for checking updates between lectures or during travel.
  • Get push notifications - the app can send real-time notifications about messages, forum posts, and assignment deadlines. Browser notifications require you to be logged in or checking emails.
  • Work around a poor or unstable internet connection - you can download resources and activities (like PDFs, pages, and some quizzes) for offline use to review later even without Wi-Fi or data.
  • Check something quickly - it loads directly to your dashboard or last-visited course without needing to log in each time. which speeds up routine checks (for grades, announcements, etc.).
  • Submit a short assignment or upload media - you can take a photo or record a short video/audio clip from your phone and submit it straight to Moodle. This is especially useful for practical or reflective assignments.
  • View media embedded into your course - if your teaching team has embedded short videos or audio into the course itself (instead of, or as well as, blocks), then you can watch these via the app.

If you find that something does not work in the app, try it via your device's web browser or on a device with a larger screen.
