Content statistics

Screenshots of each web page were overlayed with coloured rectangles relating to the type of content beneath. The number of pixels was then totalled up for each colour and this was used to determine the percentage of each type of content on a particular home page. It's only a rough guide since decisions as to what the content type was became a matter of my personal opinion although I tried to be as consistent as possible. For example, pictures were often contained within news sections or general interest areas so they wouldn't be counted explicitly.

Adverts included adverts for external sites and services as well as specific events at the university. For example, a small picture that colourfully promoted an event like an open day might be classed as an advert. Navigation included links as well as search facilities. Graphics were photos and other types of pictures that weren't contained within text or specific sections. Unused refers not only to white space (or whatever the background colour) but also borders, nondescript graphics etc. General interest is any kind of written content that didn't fit into the other categories (perhaps some information for staff or students that's not news and events related). Welcome and site identity includes information about the institution as well as logos and slogans. News and events is exactly as it sounds.
