What is Moodle?
Moodle is a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE); a web platform designed specifically to support the delivery of teaching and learning materials and activities. Moodle provides a simple, easy-to-use set of tools for creating consistent web pages for every module within a course or department, and to use those web pages to deliver information and learning activities.
- Supports fully on-line courses or blended learning approaches to augment face-to-face courses.
- Collects learning resources and activities into one location.
- Provides a number of activities including forums, wikis, quizzes, surveys, chat and peer-to-peer activities.
- Tools to support the development of high quality and pedagogically valuable courses.
- Provides fully featured assignment management tools including support for Turnitin plagiarism detection, off-line grading, group assignments and anonymous marking.
- University modules that are held in SITS appear in Moodle with students automatically enrolled.
The learning systems environment
Moodle at Warwick is part of a suite of technology enhanced learning tools, i.e. Extended Classroom tools, and works with these to enable seamless access to learning resources within the Moodle space. The tools may also work together to enhance assessment opportunities, such as supporting the submission of video or an ePortfolio of multimedia.

What can't, or shouldn't, you use Moodle for?
- Timetabling - Tabula provides access to lecture, seminar and small group teaching timetabling data, both departmental and personal.
- Important or urgent alerts - the My Warwick page and app is the best tool for urgent alerts and news.
- Outward facing websites - use SiteBuilder to create complex externally (departmental, university or wider) facing sites using one of the built in designs and layouts, or by creating custom pages.
Can I use Moodle for assignment management?
Yes, you can use Moodle for assignment management. However, Tabula is the primary assignment management system at the University.
Who can use Moodle?
Moodle is available to be accessed and used by all staff and students at Warwick.
Externals (i.e. non-Warwick staff or students) can also access Moodle if they have a 'Visitor Account' (See guide on 'Visitor Access to Moodle').
How are spaces created on Moodle?
For all modules in SITS a Moodle space is generated automatically. 'Ad hoc' spaces can also be created by departmental contacts for learning technologies with access to the Moodle-admin tool or requested via moodle at warwick dot ac dot uk
How can users access Moodle?

How do staff get access to their modules?
Those specified as Course/module leader on SITS are automatically enrolled with the course leader role on the Moodle space. The course leader can then manually enrol any additional teaching or admin staff.
How do students get access to their modules?
Students are automatically enrolled on to Moodle module spaces based on the modules listed in their SITS student record. Some spaces, notably Ad-hoc spaces, will (also or primarily) use other enrolment methods, such as manual enrolment, Warwick Auto-enrolment, as well as enrolment rules created from webgroups. What browser should I use?
For the best Moodle experience, we recommend you use Google Chrome. Other browsers can be used to view and use Moodle, but their behaviour cannot be guaranteed.
How can I ensure my content is accessible?
Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 came in to force on 23rd September 2018. In addition to our existing obligations and legal requirements, the regulations require the University to ensure that all websites and content are accessible and meet the WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards. The regulations apply to Moodle VLE.
