A welcome from your new Chancellor and proud alumna, Bience Gawanas

(LLB Law, 1986; Hon LLD, 2023)

I’m honoured to introduce this very special, commemorative alumni magazine marking 60 years of Warwick.

There’s much to celebrate – and so much more to come. As an alumna, it’s wonderful to see how our university has become the institution it is today. I want to play my part in our future, and hope you will too.

Warwick has always been a place of transformation, and it certainly was for me. I arrived here as a refugee. Someone who had been exiled, expelled, and told that becoming a lawyer was not for her. Warwick helped me turn my adversity into opportunity. It empowered me to contribute to my country, my continent, and the world.

When I qualified as a barrister at Lincoln’s Inn in 1987, I was the first black Namibian woman to grace its halls. I am now the first alumna, African, Namibian woman and former refugee Chancellor of this university. Warwick’s history, and future, are continuously evolving, creating opportunities, and shaping destinies.

From mostly farmland and an initial intake of 450 students, we are now a university of global repute with a tradition of impactful research, academic excellence, and inclusivity. You and your fellow alumni have helped make Warwick what it is today.

Together, we can shape it for tomorrow.

With warmest wishes,
Advocate Bience Gawanas
