Caseworker Development Programme
Welcome to the Caseworker Development Programme! This structured programme is designed to support you as you build the skills and confidence needed to advocate effectively for our members. Casework is a vital part of UNISON’s mission to protect and improve workplace conditions, and this programme will guide you through a gradual, supportive path to becoming an independent caseworker.
Programme Structure
The Caseworker Development Programme is divided into three phases, each providing hands-on experience alongside experienced mentors:
-
Observation:
You’ll start by observing an experienced caseworker as they handle a case from start to finish. This phase will give you insight into the key aspects of casework, including how to communicate with members, gather information, apply relevant policies, and strategise for a positive outcome. -
Assistance:
Next, you’ll move into a more active role, assisting an experienced caseworker with cases. You’ll take on tasks such as corresponding with members, researching relevant policy or legislation, and analysing case details with support. This will help you gain practical skills and confidence in the casework process. -
Leading Casework:
Then, you’ll start to take on cases as the lead caseworker, supported by an experienced caseworker in the background. This phase allows you to manage a case directly, while still having a mentor to offer feedback, answer questions, and provide support as needed.
Ongoing Support and Learning Opportunities
Throughout the programme, you’ll benefit from several key support mechanisms:
-
Mentoring: You’ll meet with an experienced caseworker, who will provide personalised guidance and feedback. These sessions offer a safe space to ask questions, discuss challenges, and reflect on your experiences.
-
Case Study Sessions: In addition to hands-on casework, you’ll participate in group case study sessions where you’ll review and analyse previous cases the branch has handled. These sessions will expose you to a wider variety of scenarios and approaches, helping you learn from real examples.
-
UNISON Training and Development: To help you build a comprehensive knowledge base, you’ll also attend relevant UNISON training opportunities on specific topics such as sickness absence management, handling grievances, negotiating reasonable adjustments, and flexible working requests. These courses will deepen your understanding of key issues you may encounter in casework.
This development programme is designed to give you a strong foundation in casework and the tools you need to succeed. Through progressive responsibility, regular mentoring, and targeted training, we’re here to support you every step of the way as you grow into this essential role in the branch.
