Background

I am a Doctoral Candidate in Business and Management at Warwick Business School. I completed my MSc degree at King's College London in Political Economy of Emerging Markets with the EU-funded Jean Monnet Scholarship; and I received my BSc degree in Industrial Engineering from Bilkent University, where I studied with full scholarship awarded based on outstanding results in University Entrance Exam and also completed a Minor degree in Psychology. Before going to Bilkent, I graduated from Balıkesir Science High School as the top 3rd student, where I specialized in Maths and Science.

Research

My dissertation is part of a larger research project, which we are conducting together with my supervisors Professors Pinar Ozcan and Markos Zachariadis, where we look at how PSD2 and open banking are expected to transform the payments market in the UK and how different players are responding to these changes in the UK and Europe. Within this project, my focus is on the entrepreneurial players of this market, specifically their entry and growth strategies. So far, we have been collecting data regarding the perspectives of various actors such as incumbent banks, fintechs (start-ups providing innovative financial services), challenger banks and industry experts. My goal is to examine the industry as an ecosystem in order to have a broader understanding of the market and the changes it goes through by incorporating the views of all stakeholders. Our research team is the recipient of 2018 Strategic Management Society Research in Organisations Award with this project.

Given the limited empirical work on the subject, I will follow an inductive approach with a multi-level design, where I will analyze firm-level strategies and challenges along with their consequences at inter-firm and market-levels in the setting of UK and European banking through semi-structured field interviews, observations, and archival research in real-time. Multiple cases will be used as a basis to build the theory inductively, and these cases will be used to understand the commonalities and differences between different categories of industry players (e.g. challenger banks, white-labelled or independent fintechs) and their business strategies.
