Launch the EUTOPIA project Reverse Engineering and Digital Imaging
A team from WMG's Centre for Imaging, Metrology, and Additive Technologies (CIMAT), led by Professor Mark Williams (WMG) and Dr Marta Ajmar (History of Art) joined international partners from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and the University of Ljubljana to launch the EUTOPIA projectReverse Engineering and Digital Imaging: Venetian Lacquer— an initiative combining research and research-led teaching exploring how historic lacquer techniques can be freshly understood today through interdisciplinary and sustainable research practices.
During the recent visit to Venice, the team examined exquisite 16th-18th-century lacquered furniture and artifacts at Ca’ Rezzonico and the Cini Collection, identifying key case studies for applying reverse engineering processes and material analysis techniques.
The next phase will involve high-resolution Digital scanning and advanced 3D imaging to help uncover the craftsmanship behind these works, with findings shared through international workshops and events planned in 2026.
