Warwick to showcase business support services to SMEs

The University of Warwick is joining forces with the region’s first Coventry and Warwickshire Business Festival to showcase its range of business support services to SMEs on Monday 20thNovember.

Warwick’s annual Meet the University event aims to inform ambitious businesses of the wide range of SME services the University is able to provide, including research and development, academic expertise, recruiting students, training current staff, hiring facilities and accessing start-up support and funding.


SafeJawz says Fangs for the help at Halloween to WMG at the University of Warwick

West Midlands sportswear company SafeJawz have said thanks, or rather Fangs, for the help that WMG researchers at the University of Warwick have given them in the development of their new range of self-fit mouth guards which are designed to make gum shields a desirable piece of sports equipment as opposed to a nuisance item that can hinder performance.

OneCov2017 is a success

Partnership for Coventry’s event OneCov2017 invited people from communities across the city to come together to listen to and learn from each other’s experience of living in our city of many cultures – and to talk about ideas for how to live and work better together for the city.

Guests discussed their concerns for the city, shared many examples of effective ways in which Coventry people make our diverse city work well, and talked about possible ways to increase cross-community understanding in future.

OneCov2017 was organised in partnership with the University of Warwick’s Community Engagement team, and was planned and facilitated by a group of 27 community facilitators from a wide range of ages, backgrounds and communities.

We've finished work on the new exit from the Science Park onto Kirby Corner Road. This new, left turn only exit will support those exiting the Science Park towards Gibbet Hill Road, avoiding Lynchgate Road and reducing congestion in that area.

Very light rail plans for Coventry move forward

Plans for a very light rail service in Coventry have moved a step closer, with researchers from WMG, at the University of Warwick, unveiling early vehicle concept designs to representatives from Coventry City Council.

The project, funded by the Government’s Local Growth Fund through the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership and West Midlands Combined Authority Devolution Deal (which is subject to approval of the business case), is set to better connect the City. This will use a state-of-the-art rail system which will be cheaper, quieter and more environmentally friendly than anything currently available.

WMG to hold special jobs fair to highlight around 200 available roles

The continued success and growth of WMG at the University of Warwick means that we are now looking almost 200 new recruits to join our team. The search is on to find engineers, researchers, project managers, data analysts, software developers, and technicians.

To help with our search we’ll be holding a recruitment open day at our International Digital Laboratory at the University of Warwick on Saturday 16 September 2017.

On the day attendees will have the chance to tour our world-class research facilities, and staff from our various research areas will be on hand to explain what it’s really like working at WMG. There will also be the chance to join a tour of our state-of-the-art research facilities to check out the sort of projects you could work on.


Join us at Coventry parkrun this Saturday, 9th September 2017

Every weekend, about 500 people take part in Coventry Parkrun around the War Memorial Park. If you’re in the area this weekend, why not cheer on or join a very special crew in orange who are jogging, walking, and even pushing buggies around the park's 5k route to fundraise for the Warwick Cancer Research Centre?

New exit from Science Park

Work has commenced on creating an additional exit from the Science Park onto Kirby Corner Road. This new, left turn only exit will support those exiting the Science Park towards Gibbet Hill Road, avoiding Lynchgate Road and reducing congestion in that area.

The City Council are undertaking the works which are due to complete before the start of term, but will involve work on the main carriageway of Kirby Corner Road on the weekend of 16 and 17 September. There will be a local road diversion in place during this weekend, but access to Westwood Campus and all Kirby Corner Road frontages will not be affected.

Coventry City Council leaders visit leading automotive centre

WMG, at the University of Warwick hosted a visit from the leader, and deputy leader, of Coventry City Council who were keen to see for themselves the significant investment in automotive research within the City.

Cllr Duggins and Cllr Khan were given tours of the National Automotive Innovation Centre and Energy Innovation Centre, both lead by WMG, where research and development focuses on energy, batteries and autonomous vehicles.

City of Culture chair "hard at work" on Coventry's final bid

Speaking at the University of Warwick after receiving an Honorary Doctorate David Burbidge, chair of the Coventry 2021 bid, said “We’re in the final shortlist now, which we are thrilled about. It was announced late on Friday and we had a day of celebration on Saturday, then it was back to work. We’re now hard at work, working towards the final bid”.

WMG and Jaguar Land Rover in electrifying £5.7 million Prosperity Partnership

WMG at the University of Warwick has been awarded £5.7 million by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to form a Prosperity Partnership with Jaguar Land Rover that could literally be described as ”electrifying”.

Thousands donated to cancer research at the University of Warwick

Cancer research in the region has received a boost thanks to the former Lord Mayor of Coventry Cllr Lindsley Harvard. At the start of his term in office Cllr Harvard chose the University of Warwick’s Cancer Research Centre as one of his official charities.

Watch - or serenade! - Cirque Bijou at Godiva Festival

This year's Godiva Festival is set for a Sunday circus spectacular, thanks to the team behind the bid to be UK City of Culture in 2021.

As part of Coventry City of Culture Trust’s bid events programme, Cirque Bijou will be performing at the UK’s biggest free festival on Sunday, July 9, presenting ‘New Day’, an exciting outdoor circus show, specially created for Godiva Festival.

The 25 minute show, which will run twice a day, will reach a dramatic finale with a daredevil highline walk, accompanied by a Coventry community choir singing ELO’s Mr Blue Sky – and organisers are appealing for people to join the choir.

WMG student praised for tireless work in the local community

One of our e-Business Management students Saknakosnak Prum (Nak) has been awarded the prestigious “Chevening Volunteering Award" for his tireless work with the local Canley community.

Nak, originally from Cambodia, who is a Chevening scholar, has been praised as a ‘great ambassador for the University.’ Despite his demanding Master’s schedule, over the past year he has also worked alongside Warwick Volunteers in the local community helping at special Easter events, Pop Up Cafés and on the creation of the Canley community garden.

In addition Nak has also volunteered at CoderDojo events with Technology Volunteers and helped out at the Wheels for All Santa Ride, approaching everything with great energy and enthusiasm.

Nak was presented with his award from the Chevening Secretariat at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London in June.

Coventry launches the new 10 year cultural strategy for the city

Coventry is a dynamic place of invention, cultural diversity and youthful ambition and is proud to be a leading city of culture in modern Britain.

That’s the key vision of the new city-wide Coventry Cultural Strategy 2017-27 which has been launched with Coventry’s business and cultural partners, artists and community leaders at an event hosted by The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum.

Its development has been funded by Arts Council England (ACE) and Coventry City Council, with support from both the University of Warwick and Coventry University, and is based on an extensive consultation process.

Warwick in the region: Coventry and Warwickshire Champions

Over 200 business and organisation leaders from across the West Midlands gathered in Birmingham on Friday morning at the fifth anniversary Coventry and Warwickshire Champions meeting, hearing from leaders of key regional organisations, including Warwick’s Vice-Chancellor and President Stuart Croft, on how collaboration across the region is critical to raise its profile.


Multi-prize winning academy race team reach national finals

Last week the WMG Academy for Young Engineers race team, Academy Racing, won 3 awards at the regional F1 in schools competition finals and motored their way into the national finals hosted by Silverstone Circuit, the home of British motor racing.

The regional finals took place at the Shireland Collegiate Academy in Smethwick. Academy racing, headed up by Eddie Hodierne (17) won awards for best research and development, best team identity and were awarded second place overall.

£3.2m funding for Midlands-based high performance computing centre

The Midlands Innovation group of universities, which includes the University of Warwick, have been awarded £3.2million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to establish HPC Midlands Plus – a centre of excellence in high performance computing (HPC).

£2.2m award by the Department of Transport for ZAPINAMO and WMG to trial new technology for charging electric commercial vehicles

Transport Minister John Hayes has announced that ZAPINAMO has been awarded £2.2m by the Department of Transport, the Office for Low Emission Vehicles and InnovateUK under the Low Emissions Freight Trial to work with WMG and others to trial technology for ultra high speed rapid and movable charging technology for commercial vehicles.

Estates Office named "Employer of the Year" by City College Coventry

The Estates Office has been named "Employer of the Year" in City College Coventry's 2016 Shine Awards.

We were nominated by City College's Carpentry Assessor who was impressed with the work of our own Lee Cartwright and his support for the 3 apprentices training on campus. The award comes in recognition of Lee’s commitment to ensuring the apprentices benefit from a well-rounded experience, his proactive approach, and the way he goes above and beyond, making sure the University maintains a strong relationship with the College.

Christmas Toy Collection for Coventry Children

Staff and students from across the University have very generously contributed hundreds of toys and gifts for looked after and vulnerable children in Coventry.

Father Christmas himself helps to give out the presents at Coventry City Council's annual Christmas party for vulnerable and looked after children.

It is a sad truth that for many of these children, this might be the only present they receive this Christmas.

New million pound Coventry and Warwickshire Hub for developing advanced lightweight metals

WMG, at the University of Warwick, will be building on its reputation in materials research, as it is set to be a hub for the development and application of advanced lightweight metals, thanks to a £1m Growth Deal award from the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP).

The award will create a local network of knowledge, equipment and skills – supporting WMG to share its expertise on steels and other advanced materials with companies in the CWLEP area.

Enjoy a leisurely lunchtime bike ride on a 2 mile traffic free route through the Warwickshire countryside. Bring your own bike, use a the University of Warwick's Unicycles hire bikes or borrow one of ours. Wheels for All Adapted bikes are available on request.

To make it even more fun Santa suits and refreshments are provided.

Donations are invited to support new adapted bikes for Wheels for All Coventry. (Suggested donation £5 students, £10 staff).

Coventry Godiva Lions find out how their donation will help to fight cancer

Following a generous donation to our cancer research work, Coventry Godiva Lions visited Professor Peter Sadler's team to find out about their pioneering work in new anti-cancer drug development.

Our Cancer Research Centre works closely with the existing Warwick Clinical Trials Unit to fuse elements of cancer clinical trials with clinical sciences at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) and University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW).

FarGo Village and Warwick University to host academics and artists exhibition

To celebrate Coventry’s bid for the UK City of Culture in 2017, the University of Warwick and Fargo Village are bringing artists and academics together for an exhibition of local artists work. The exhibition will invite applications from 17 artists (from all mediums and crafts) and 17 PhD students at the University of Warwick. The artists will create pieces based on the research ideas of PhD students from the University of Warwick. The exhibition will get underway on November 26, 2016.
