The purpose of the module is to allow advanced students to begin work on a long writing project, which can be a novel, a novella, a collection of poetry, or any other form for which we can offer proper support in the department.
Students considering this module must apply before the start of the academic year: part-time students, must do so at the start of their FIRST year. Each student will be assigned a tutor who will offer them one-to-one tutorials over two terms. In addition to helping students begin, redraft, and polish their work, tutors will offer students reading lists that are tailored to the students' particular needs and interests. In order to apply, please submit a 500-word outline or proposal via the online module selection form by 1st September. If this is not received electronically it will not be considered.
Supervision will begin in Term 2 and continue until the end of Term 3.
Assessment: Students will submit 18 000 words plus a 2000 word commentary for assessment on the fourth submission date (1st September). Students writing full-length novels can, if they wish, submit excerpts of their novels for assessment for EN906 and EN910 and submit a third (and final) excerpt for the Long Project. If they submit several different excerpts for assessment, we suggest including a brief summary of the novel, so that markers can contextualise the work under consideration. The commentary should briefly examine the aims and processes of the work as well as explaining how the ways in which the work changed shape over the year. We do not mark the commentary separatel;y. We assign a single mark to the whole submission.
NB: This is a double-weighted module (equates to 2 modules)
