THIS MODULE WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE IN 2013-14

Aims: This module explores different forms of media translation while posing questions about the role of translation in today’s global and digitalized world. It aims to provide students with a grounding in the functioning of audiovisual translation (dubbing, subtitling, voice-over) and translation technology (teletranslation, localization) while helping them develop critical awareness of the wider cultural and ideological implications of media translation.

Learning outcomes:

· Familiarize oneself with the practices and functions of translation in global media communication

· Understand how media and translation frameworks can help shed light on selected translation forms and practices

· Analyse and critically assess the linguistic, semiotic and discoursal features of selected media texts

· Evaluate the cultural and ideological implications of media translation activities

Syllabus: Key concepts and theories, typologies of audiovisual translation, digitalization and translation technology, practical workshops and in-depth case studies of selected media texts.

Assessment: One essay of 5,000 words.
