Seminar questions

For each seminar one to two students will sign up to prepare two seminar questions for discussion during the session. Seminar questions must be based on the week’s readings and should stimulate a focused and interesting discussion of a key aspect of the session or text.

To compose your question, please consider and reflect on the week’s reading material. Ask yourself, what really interests me about the reading(s) and why?

Please bear in mind that good seminar questions:

  • develop key ideas from the texts, taking you beyond the text itself.
  • are challenging but also accessible, leading to discussion.
  • are detailed and focussed.
  • should avoid simple yes/no questions; if they are structured in this way they should lead to motivations and explanations.
  • are concise. Feel free to contextualise or introduce your question, but aim to keep this brief.
