Resit Information

Any resit students who took the 30 CAT version from 2023/24 or 2024/25 should visit the moodle page for that course/year to see the assessment information.

2026/27

If you are required to resit any of the Tales of Terror assessment components either in the summer or in the following academic year as Resit Without Residence:

(1) The Practical and Critical Reflection (20%) whilst still 1400 words for resit is now a "Practical exercise on periodical publishing and subsequent critical and personal reflective narrative using EITHER physical and digital OR digital resources only."

i.e. in case you are unable to physically access the library during your resit period you may do everything the same as per the moodle guidelines but choose to replace the physical periodical with a second, different, digitised c19th periodical and you might reflect on using different platforms and online repositories for accessing each and/or talk more about the difference between the periodicals in relation to the Gothic content. If you can get to the library you are strongly encouraged to do the physical component.

(Assignment 2) THE "Group Anthology & Individual Reflection" IS REPLACED with a project/essay on "Anthologising and Collecting the Gothic" for which you have two options:

[Option 1] you can construct your own anthology of Short-Form Gothic texts published in the long c19th using the same guidance from the main assessment but ignoring the group work section, mocking up the anthology in a pertinent format (note the samples on moodle). You will write your own Critical Introduction (1000) for that anthology that is included in the mocked up version AND write a critical reflection (500 words) on the process of researching it using the same guidelines from the main assessment. This is based on the assumption that you did not really start the group work and so you will now complete a new, whole project as an individual, that uses a different topic for the anthology.

[Option 2] write a 2000 word critical review of two existing anthologies of c19th Gothic short form works - thinking about them *as* modes of collecting the Gothic, how they are packaged, marketed etc. The specific guidelines for this can be found here.Link opens in a new window

(Assignment 3) The requirements for the independent Research Essay are the same as on the moodle (3000 words for intermediate and 3800 words for finalists and the options of what to do are the same.)
