The materials offered here were first commissioned and collated by Amy Cutler, who also thought up the arresting title. As it doesn’t appear possible to produce a quality print edition in the foreseeable future as was originally intended, it seems appropriate now to make the collection available online to a wider audience.

Amy’s leading idea has been to draw on the role of the gloss, as able to offer (sometimes in visual form) a range of paratextual practices, often outside the range of standard academic commentary, while also making space for some longer discursive essays. Her collection aims to ‘foliate “horizontals” of criticism across marginalia, collaboration and cross-reference’ as she wrote in her original introduction. The assembly of material as it now is remains almost exactly along the lines first conceived, though, for simplicity’s sake, the contributions are presented in alphabetical order.
