Speaking Examinations Information for Students (Japanese)

11-12 mins Part 1: Long turn (topic chosen from a set list and prepared in advance by student) (3 minutes), followed by discussion/debate on the topic prepared by student for the long turn ( 3 minutes)
Part 2: Discussion with examiner on 3 topics studied/discussed in class (5-6 minutes)
Level 4 9-10 mins Part 1: Long turn (student is given three topics to prepare in advance and one is chosen at random during the test) followed by a set of 2/3 questions to explore topic (2 minutes for long turn + 2 minutes for exploration)
Part 2: Discussion with examiner on 3 topics studied/discussed in class (5-6 minutes)
Level 3 8-9 mins Part 1: Long turn (student is given three topics to prepare in advance and one is chosen at random during the test) followed by a set of 2/3 questions to explore topic (2 minutes for long turn + 2 minutes for exploration)

Level 2 7-8 mins Part 1: 2 role plays (1 transactional + 1 social) (3 minutes)

  • Oral examinations take place in term 3 from week 3 or 4.
  • The numbers of minutes are approximate.
  • Oral examinations are recorded.
  • In levels 3-4, for the long turn, a separate card is prepared for each topic by the student, in the target language, with max 6 bullets, max 20 words (or numbers). Topics are published in moodle in term 2 week 8.
  • In level 5, for the long turn, the student can bring visual prompts and a card with max 6 bullets, max 20 words (or numbers). Topics are published in moodle in term 2 week 8.
