Shirleana
Previous Editions
The only previous large scale edition of the works of James Shirley is William Gifford and Alexander Dyce's The Dramatic Works and Poems of James Shirley, 8 vols (1833). There have been a small number of edited editions of individual plays by Shirley, such as:
- Marilyn Thorssen's The Lady of Pleasure (Revels, 1980)
- Frances Senescu's The Bird in a Cage (Renaissance Drama, 1980)
- Martin Flavin's The Wedding (Renaissance Drama, 1980)
- Elizabeth Yearling's The Cardinal (Revels, 1986)
More recently, Shirley's The Bird in a Cage also appeared in Three Seventeenth-Century Plays on Women and Performance, ed. Hero Chalmers, Julie Sanders and Sophie Tomlinson (Revels, 2006). A wide range of reprints of original Shirley quartos are published by the British Library.
