Research
I am currently pursuing research on the following topics:
1. The Politics of Museums and Galleries
This research has investigated the impact of a range of exogenous and endogenous variables on how museums and galleries staff approach their work. An empirical investigation of the work of managers and conservation, curatorial and education staff in local authority, national and university museums and galleries was funded by a small grant from the British Academy, and this developed from earlier work investigating the impact of an instrumentalisation of museums policy (and whether this had actually occured) undertaken under the auspices of an AHRC project headed by Andrew Newman of Newcastle University. This work has then led into a wider concern with the general politics of the museums sector as a whole.

2. State Organisations and Cultural Policy
This is an ongoing set of research interests based around how the state manages cultural policy issues through a range of organisations located in central, regional and local governments, and through a range of quasi-governmental organisations. As can be seen this covers a great deal of ground including analyses of what the state does, how it does it, and what difference it makes in the field of cultural policy. The basis of this work lies in political science and the British tradition of public administration.
