Michael Holroyd has published several acclaimed biographies, including those of Lytton Strachey and Augustus John. He is a former Chairman of the Society of Authors and President of English PEN. He has also published two volumes of memoirs and a collection of essays about biography. In 1989 he was awarded the CBE for services to literature.
