Muriel Rukeyser

Muriel Rukeyser was a poet whose political involvement is often reflected in her poetry. She covered the People's Olympiad for the Daily Worker in 1936, witnessing the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War which inspired Mediterranean, and her investigation into an outbreak of silicosis amongst miners in the Hawk's Nest incident was documented in her poem sequence The Book of the Dead (1938). In the 1960s and 1970s she attracted attention for her feminism and her opposition to the Vietnam war.
