Claire Tomalin has published several acclaimed biographies of figures such as Jane Austen, Mary Wollstonecraft and Thomas Hardy, and won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (for biography) for The Invisible Woman: The Story of Nelly Ternan and Charles Dickens (an account of Dickens' relationship with the actress Nelly Ternan). She has also written a play, The Winter Wife, based on her biography of Katherine Mansfield.
