Derek Walcott

Derek Walcott was born in St. Lucia and is the author of many books of poetry and plays. He was awarded the Queen's Medal for Poetry in 1988 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. In 1959 he set up the Trinidad Theatre Workshop to explore political, social and cultural issues of the region. In 1961 he received the OB award for his drama.
