Overseas Institutional Visit (OIV): Morgan Milne

Morgan Milne is on the Sports, Exercise and Rehabilitation Pathway at the University of Birmingham; their research investigates beliefs about emotions, emotion regulation, and mental health in adolescent vocational dance students.

Morgan undertook a two-month long Overseas Institutional Visit at the University of Toronto, Canada from April to June 2024.

As part of her placement, Morgan integrated into the Sport and Performance Lab and worked on a series of concurrent research projects. Morgan assisted in the data collection for the evaluation phase of a 12-week Emotion Focused Therapy feasibility study among athletes, assisted in the recruitment of a quantitative study examining emotion dysregulation, mental health, and performance in USA and Canadian dancers, and conducted an extensive literature search and review on a project examining emotion dysregulation and mental health in elite athletes.

During her visit, Morgan wrote the introduction for a co-authored manuscript with Dr. Katherine Tamminen.

Writing about the OIV, Morgan said that:

“My OIV has had and will continue to have a positive impact on my PhD and intended future career within academia. I have developed an amplitude of skills that will contribute towards the completion of my PhD including research and personal skills”

Morgan also organised a symposium alongside Dr. Katherine Tamminen for the NASPSPA conference in New Orleans where she presented the first of her PhD findings and was able to expand her research network.

“Dr Katherine Tamminen and I have opened up the possibility for future work such as a post-doctorate at the University of Toronto, as well as the possibility of working together again on additional projects in the future which will be advantageous for my career in academia.”
