Thesis Title: A qualitative exploration of community-based group art initiatives and well-being for young adult carers.

This project seeks to advance our understanding of the social meaning and value of community-based visual arts activities for marginalised young adult carers (age 16-25). It will include a qualitative exploration of relationships between arts-based activities and perceptions of well-being. Comparison between the UK and Nigeria will be made to deepen this understanding across two socio-culturally and politically diverse contexts.

Biography

Galina Gardiner has experience as a psychology researcher, professional artist and ecologist. Her most recent work has been as a qualitative researcher on Warwick Medical School's cardiac arrest survival programme. Prior to this, Galina obtained an MSc in Psychology remotely with Arden University during the Covid19 pandemic. During this time she ran online art classes for young adult carers, partly inspiring her interest in the potential of group art activities for enhancing wellbeing. Galina has many years' experience as a professional artist, undertaking private and public commissions, holding exhibitions, and running workshops and demonstrations for schools and art clubs.
