Thesis Title: The Contemporary Rural Working Classes of England and Wales

This project will investigate the contemporary rural working classes of England and Wales using the ASHE Linked Census 2011 dataset. It aims to define and empirically quantify this under-represented group in academic literature through a detailed analysis of socio-economic characteristics, occupations and earnings at the local authority level. Using this data, this research will enhance understanding of the rural labour market and social stratification by examining working conditions, patterns of inequality, job insecurity and wage disparities. The findings will inform policymakers by highlighting contemporary trends in currently overlooked inequalities contributing to more evidence-based policymaking for rural employment and anti-poverty strategies, therefore delivering clear public benefit through improved targeting of support.

Biography:

I am a PhD student in Human Geography and Social Science at the University of Leicester, funded by the ESRC and ADR UK. I hold a BA in Sociology and MSc in Social Science Research (Human Geography), both of which laid the foundation for my current focus on the quantitative analysis of social and spatial inequalities.

My PhD research focuses on the rural working class and uses advanced statistical methods to explore geographic and demographic patterns in employment, income and inequality in the United Kingdom. Specifically, I work with the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings - Linked 2011 Census dataset which combines detailed earnings data with personal characteristics and use both R and QGIS to perform statistical and spatial analysis. I am particularly interested in the potential of administrative data and quantitative analysis to enhance our understanding of the rural working class. Also, I hope to support more informed, data-driven approaches to tackling inequalities through policy.

Outside of my studies, I am a keen musician playing tune percussion and sometimes the Euphonium in a brass band and also enjoy learning different languages like Korean and French.
