Thesis Title: “Where have you been?” - An exploration of excluded young people’s experiences of placement at Alternative Provision (AP) and their transitions between AP and mainstream schools in England.

My research focuses on the experiences of children and young people excluded from mainstream schools who attend alternative provision (AP), and the reintegration process from AP back into mainstream schools. The young people I plan on working with have been permanently excluded from mainstream school due to behavioural difficulties, often linked to social, emotional and mental health difficulties. This group of young people often experience challenges within the education system, and their higher risk of permanent exclusion and suspension is an ongoing issue within educational policy and practice. Working from a transformative perspective, my research aims to highlight the voices of the young people involved in these processes, specifically focusing on the reintegration process, where young people return to mainstream provision after a placement in AP. The experiences and perspectives of these young people will be used to develop and inform a framework for schools on how to undertake reintegrations, offering guidance for support and procedures.
