Thesis Title: Supporting Survivors of Forced Marriage

Forced marriage is neither endorsed by any major world religion, nor solely experienced by people from one religious, ethnic or cultural background. This said, it is rooted in patriarchal understandings of women’s roles both as individuals and as part of the wider family and community. The global community has committed itself to ending child, early and forced marriage by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. However, even if this goal is met, there would still be significant numbers of people in the UK living in forced marriages. The project will explore what enables women to leave a forced marriage, what their experiences are in the years after leaving, and what further in-house services Karma Nirvana could consider providing for victims/survivors.

Biography

I hold a first class BA Hons in Humanistic Counselling Practice and an MA with merit in Trauma Studies, both from the University of Nottingham. I am a qualified person-centred counsellor with professional experience of working with victims of forced marriage. I am able to sensitively explore how individuals make sense and derive meaning from their experiences, and how they experience growth and development following trauma. My counselling experience includes working as voluntary counsellor with traumatised primary school children and volunteering with Rape Crisis for two years. Since January 2018 I have been in private practice, predominantly working with survivors of forced marriage and victims and survivors of rape and childhood sexual abuse. I am passionate about both the elimination of forced marriage and the study of trauma. For me, the Person-Centred methodology is not limited to the therapeutic alliance – this is the approach which best suits my personal and professional values and beliefs.
