Sustainable Development, Net Zero and Climate Resilience

This pathway will work across UKRI remits and targets research ‘that generates the evidence needed to build resilience to environmental damage and climate change, drive a successful social and economic transition to a Net Zero society and a sustainable and biodiverse environment, and inform sustainable growth and desirable social outcomes’ (ESRC Strategic Delivery Plan 2022, p.23). This will involve collaborating with a wide range of disciplines within and outside of social sciences, as well as collaborations with external partners at both home and abroad. Moreover, this pathway will help facilitate international engagement, fieldwork and overseas institutional visits in line with UKRI’s (2022) International Strategic Framework that recognises the vital importance of international collaboration in research and innovation in ways that address wider imperatives, from global development to climate resilience.

MGS institutions recognise that research into this area can be driven from many disciplinary backgrounds. As such this pathway will be is open to applications from all eligible MGS DTP disciplines. We further encourage working across research council remits where appropriate (an ESRC strategic steer), but the primary supervisor must be from an existing MGS pathway to ensure the project is at least 51% social science in orientation.

This cross-cutting interdisciplinary pathway is available via all other pathways available at the University of Nottingham:

  • Applied Linguistics
  • Area Studies
  • Economic & Social History
  • Economics
  • Education
  • Health & Wellbeing
  • Human Geography
  • Management & Business Studies

Your lead supervisor must be based in one of the pathways listed above and you should make your PhD admissions application to the School in which they are based.

IMPORTANT

Potential applicants for 2025 entry should contact a prospective supervisor or, if you have yet to identify an appropriate advisor, please contact Dr Virginia Panizzo by Monday 9th December 2024.

When you contact a prospective supervisor or Dr Panizzo, please send your CV, a one-page note on your preparation and motivation to conduct research to PhD level on a topic in Sustainable Development, Net Zero and Climate Resilience and a one-page outline of your proposed research topic. This will help us to advise on your eligibility and the fit of your proposed research with our interests and expertise.

As this studentship is funded by the ESRC, your proposed research project must principally employ social science methods. If you have concerns about the ‘fit’ of your project with the ESRC remit, this page provides further guidance on disciplinary remit. In addition, the ESRC has a remit query form where you can submit project summaries for a decision in advance of making an application.
