Provision of Training
I prefer to focus on your technical training first, so you can become more independent more quickly. However, that doesn't mean I won't be available to help with more challenging tasks or whenever needed.
Progression Monitoring and Management
I like to be kept up to date and usually have informal daily morning coffee meetings where we can discuss the plan for the day, progress, or anything you need from me to move forward. There is also a weekly meeting for the OPM group, where everyone using this modality can discuss their projects.
Communication
I'm known for emailing my team and PhD students at all hours, but I don't expect you to follow the same schedule. Our team regularly communicates via Teams during the week and occasionally on weekends. For urgent queries or announcements, I may also use WhatsApp (only if you're comfortable joining the group chat) and will respect your preferred working/online hours.
PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me:
In a group meeting
At least once per week
In year 1 of PhD study
At least once per week
In year 2 of PhD study
At least once per week
In year 3 of PhD study
At least once per week
These meetings will mainly be face to face. I am usually contactable for an instant response every working day.
Work Patterns
Certain tasks in my lab need to occur at set times, and students need to be able to commit to a rota/timetable shared with other members of the team.
Notice Period for Feedback
I need at least 1 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
