Scientific Background

Research Interests

The Peacock group is interested in the de novo (from “first-principles”) design of functional metallopeptides. Specifically, the group focuses on the use of designed artificial miniature protein folds as novel ligands for metal ions. These miniature protein scaffolds offer unprecedented opportunities to exploit the advantages afforded by biomolecules, yet with the simplicity more commonly encountered in small molecule inorganic chemistry complexes.

Importantly the group is focused on the use of these as ligands for metal ions with no known biological role, but with attractive chemistries, so as to develop biology-chemistry hybrids with new functions for new applications. To date the group has extensively explored the coordination of lanthanides to coiled coils.

We are able to effectively tune the lanthanide coordination chemistry and resulting physical properties using peptide design, which has included exploring their potential for use as MRI contrast agents.

Provision of Training

At the beginning of your PhD you will receive support and training from both myself and more experienced PhD students/postdocs. As you progress through your PhD, you will be expected to work more independently.

Progression Monitoring and Management

I’m very involved and am keen to see your data, discuss your progress on a weekly basis.

Communication

The group uses Slack for day to day communication (but you can set this to only be active during working hours), we have weekly group meetings, and I tend to have weekly 1:1 meetings with students.

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me:

The meetings will be face to face or via video chat and although I have an open door policy, my pattern of being contactable for an instant response is not predictable.

Working Pattern

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings), I expect students to manage their own time. However, for safe working practices (ie not working alone) this tends to mean working during core hours.

Notice Period for Feedback

I need at least 1 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
