Scientific Background

Research Interests

Alice is an entomologist and manages the Forest Trapping Network run by Forest Research. The Forest Trapping Network is a network of insect traps which surveys Great Britain for quarantine and priority tree pests.

Alice joined Forest Research in 2023 having previously worked for UCL as a postdoctoral researcher, studying the effects of farmland pond condition on pollinator communities. She completed a BSc in Zoology at Manchester University in 2014, before undertaking an MRes in conservation at the University of Liverpool in 2015. In 2017, Alice embarked on a PhD studying the functional roles of ants in a savanna ecosystem.

Provision of Training

I will assist with your technical training at first, encouraging you to be more independent as your PhD progresses.

Progression Monitoring and Management

I like to be kept up to date, and will expect to see evidence of method development/data generation, results on a regular basis. We will troubleshoot issues together. I am here for advice and guidance to help you reach the goals you set for yourself.

Communication

I work a regular working week. I’m happy to schedule a call to catch up as required.

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me:

In a group meeting

At least once per fortnight

In year 1 of PhD study

At least once per fortnight

In year 2 of PhD study

At least once per fortnight

In year 3 of PhD study

At least once per fortnight

These meetings will be a mixture of face to face and via video chat or telephone, and I am usually contactable for an instant response every working day.

Work Patterns

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings), I expect students to manage their own time.

Notice Period for Feedback

I need at least 2 weeks' notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
