In three words or phrases: Keen to invest in people and keep focus on research that addresses ‘what matters’.
Provision of Training
I would want the PhD student to be embedded with the wider research group to develop that wider understanding of how a problem often needs several solutions. I am also keen that this PhD develops the individual towards his/her personal goals. For example, it is important to me that research has a clear way to change the world in the positive way. PhD students would be given regular supervision 1:1 and helped with establishing a plan/roadmap towards completing both the PhD and associated posters, conference presentations and scientific publications.
Progression Monitoring and Management
I am always contactable and there will be a plan for completion of certain milestones throughout the PhD to keep oversight of progression. I always aim to publish papers throughout the life of the PhD (not left to the end) as a way of preparing students for making the most of opportunities immediately after PhD submission and as an unequivocal demonstration of progress. I expect students to have ownership of their project, with support from supervisors and the wider team as necessary.
Communication
I am a clinical academic, meaning my availability may mean we need to communicate by phone/email at short notice. I try to respect the work/life boundaries of my students as much as possible. We will have regular 1:1 sessions in the diary as well as the range of regular meetings across the research team. I prefer to ‘know’ rather than ‘not know’ about any concerns or problems so that we can work on solutions together.
PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me:
In a group meeting
At least once per fortnight
In year 1 of PhD study
At least once per fortnight
In year 2 of PhD study
At least once per fortnight
In year 3 of PhD study
At least once per fortnight
These meetings will be a mixture of face to face, video chat or telephone and although I have an open door policy, my pattern of being contactable for an instant response is not predictable.
Working Pattern
The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings), I expect students to manage their own time.
Notice Period for Feedback
I need at least 2 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
