Provision of Training
I provide structured, needs-led training that combines direct support in core experimental and analytical techniques with access to specialist expertise, formal courses and peer-to-peer learning. I encourage students to develop independence and take ownership of their research from an early stage, while providing appropriate oversight, regular feedback and additional support when needed.
Progression Monitoring and Management
I expect students to take increasing ownership of their progression as the PhD develops. In the first year I provide closer support, working with the student to assess their abilities, training needs and project development, with regular review of progress and agreed milestones. From the second year onwards, I progressively encourage greater independence, while maintaining regular oversight, constructive feedback and additional support where needed.
Communication
I keep communication open, regular and flexible, using scheduled one-to-one meetings alongside email and informal discussion as needed. I encourage students to raise scientific, practical or personal issues early, and while I may communicate outside standard hours, I do not expect students to respond outside their normal working pattern and place importance on maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Meetings
PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per week. These meetings will be a mixture of face-to-face and via video chat or telephone. I am usually contactable for an instant response (if required) on every working day.
Work Patterns
The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings) I expect students to manage their own time.
Notice Period for Feedback
I need at least 1 week's notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5,000 words.
