Provision of Training
My philosophy is that PhD training is a collaborative effort. I initially take responsibility for technical training to establish a strong foundation, then gradually encourage independence as the student gains confidence. Training will also involve support from our lab community fellow PhD students and experienced postdocs to provide a comprehensive learning environment.
Progression Monitoring and Management
I believe in a balanced approach to progression monitoring and management. While I encourage students to take ownership of their progress, I remain available for guidance and troubleshooting when needed. I set clear expectations for progression on a regular basis, and if criteria are not met, we will collaborate to develop a plan of action. My aim is to support and push students to achieve their full potential while providing the necessary resources and mentorship.
Communication
I maintain open and flexible communication, often using email and team chat groups for updates, but I do not necessarily expect the same response patterns from my students. While I encourage staying engaged with team communications, I also emphasize the importance of managing a healthy work-life balance. I am always available to discuss any challenges impacting progress, and I encourage students to seek pastoral support from the postgraduate research student support team at Harper Adams University if needed.
PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me:
In a group meeting
At least once per week
In year 1 of PhD study

These meetings will either be face to face or online. I am usually contactable for an instant response on every working day.
Work Patterns
Certain tasks in my lab need to occur at set times, and students need to be able to commit to a rota/timetable shared with other members of the team.
Notice Period for Feedback
I need at least 1 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
