In three words or phrases: Supportive, collaborative, and goal-driven
Provision of Training
Training needs will change as you progress through your PhD. I will make sure that you receive the necessary training to help you become a confident and accomplished independent researcher.
Progression Monitoring and Management
I like to be kept up to date on a weekly basis. When things do not go according to plan, I want you to ask me for advice so we can troubleshoot together. I appreciate independence but I do not want you going round in circles and/or losing sight of your final research aim. Similarly, I want to hear your successes, so we can celebrate them together.
Communication
I am happy to help and support you whenever you need me (including any pastoral issues). I trust your common sense and expect you not to be contacting me out of hours/working week unless there is a real emergency.
PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me:
In a group meeting
At least once per month
In year 1 of PhD study
At least once per week
In year 2 of PhD study
At least once per week
In year 3 of PhD study
At least once per week
These meetings will be a mixture of face to face or via video chat or telephone, and although I have an open door policy, my pattern of being contactable for an instant response is not predictable.
Working Pattern
Certain tasks in my lab need to occur at set times, and students need to be able to commit to a rota/timetable shared with other members of the team.
Notice Period for Feedback
I need at least 1 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
