Scientific Background

Research Interests

Using agent-based modelling, Dr Kaul is collaborating with experts from the University of Leicester’s Schools of Engineering and Mathematics and Department of Respiratory Sciences on his pioneering research project, titled ‘The Lung Pharmacome’.

The project aims to produce a working in silico lung by 2024, with the ambition of conducting patient-specific ‘virtual clinical trials’ by 2025 at the earliest. The initial area of focus for the research will be lung diseases, specifically asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with scientists and clinicians at the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Leicester Biomedical Research Centre’s respiratory theme, based at Glenfield Hospital.

At Kaul Lab, we develop computational, experimental, and analytical platform technologies to improve personalised interventions targeting chronic respiratory diseases.

Provision of Training

I will be responsible for your technical training, including written and verbal communication, during the first year of your PhD and guide you to independence. I am supportive of efforts to attend workshops and summer schools to enhance further training and expect you to take a proactive role in finding these opportunities.

Progression Monitoring and Management

I host weekly lab meetings where students in the lab present their work to an interdisciplinary audience, which helps them hone their communication skills. I meet my students 1:1 once every week for at least 30 minutes. I expect my students to manage their own time, though I am always available for guidance.

Communication

The lab has a Teams and WhatsApp group that we use for communication. I also visit the lab every day for brief F2F chats with my students and to troubleshoot issues. I am always happy to guide students on how they can best fulfil their potential.

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me:

At least once per fortnight

The meetings will be face to face and I am usually contactable for an instant response (if required) on every working day.

Working Pattern

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings), I expect students to manage their own time.

Notice Period for Feedback

I need at least 2 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
