In three words or phrases: Scaffolded supervision, Student-centred mentorship, Progressive independence
Provision of Training
I adopt a scaffolded supervision style, offering intensive support and structured training at the outset, before progressively encouraging greater autonomy and independent decision-making as the student gains experience.
Progression Monitoring and Management
My approach to progression monitoring is initially structured and hands-on, helping students establish strong foundations and effective working practices. Over time, I encourage students to take greater ownership of their research, while maintaining an open-door policy for advice and guidance whenever needed.
Communication
I promote open and accessible communication through regular meetings and an open-door policy, while remaining available to provide additional support when needed. My approach is holistic and student-centred, combining academic and pastoral guidance, with the expectation that students take increasing ownership of their research and development.
Meetings
PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per fortnight. These meetings will be a mixture of face-to-face and via video chat or telephone. I am usually contactable for an instant response on every working day.
Work Patterns
The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings) I expect students to manage their own time.
Notice Period for Feedback
My notice period to provide feedback on written work of up to 5,000 words is highly flexible depending on timeline and content.
