Scientific Background

Research Interests

I am an applied conservation ecologist interested in understanding how animal behaviour, species interactions and population dynamics can be used to address real-world conservation problems. My research has particularly focused on predator–prey interactions, behavioural ecology and the conservation of threatened and recovering species. I am interested not only in understanding ecological processes, but in translating that evidence into practical conservation interventions and management. My work combines field ecology with quantitative approaches to wildlife monitoring and population ecology. Much of my research has involved working closely with conservation practitioners and land managers.

Scientific Inspiration

I am particularly inspired by scientists who successfully bridge the gap between ecological research and conservation practice. My former PhD supervisor, Xavier Lambin, is a key example of this kind of research.

Provision of Training

I probably take a mixed approach. I am happy to be hands-on with students early in their studies or as they develop skills in new and challenging topics, such as field skills or quantitative analysis. I am happy to provide training for topics I am able to, but also keen to help students develop and find training from others where suitable.

Progression Monitoring and Management

I prefer to have regular discussions about progress and current goals in person. It is important to keep on track with key steps and goals, particularly early on in the PhD, with this becoming more relaxed as the project progresses and the student takes on more ownership of direction.

Communication

I encourage open and informal communication and would much rather you raise a question or problem early than struggle with it unnecessarily. I see myself as an "in person, person" always happy to discuss research with students. I am often and always thinking about ecology and research, but also appreciate the need for a good work-life balance.

Meetings

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per fortnight. These meetings will be face-to-face and I am usually contactable for an instant response on every working day.

Work Patterns

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings) I expect students to manage their own time.

Notice Period for Feedback

I need at least 2 weeks’ notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
