Scientific Background

Research Interests

My research centres around understanding the mechanisms which contribute to muscle loss and dysfunction in those with multiple long term conditions (MLTCs), with a particular focus on how the onset and resolution of inflammation contributes to the endotypes noted in patient populations. I use a translational 'bench-to-bedside' approach in order to uncover therapeutic targets and develop subsequent interventions for patient benefit.

My research interests are in line with the below themes:

Disease induced skeletal muscle loss & dysfunction.
Mechanisms of resolution physiology (production & function).
Patient specific cellular modelling.
Biological definitions of skeletal muscle presentation.
Biomarkers of disease progression.

Patient populations of interest:

Multiple long term conditions (MLTCs).
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM).

Provision of Training

Training is a process not a specific activity and should be built into every element of the PhD process in relation to information digestion, time management, specific techniques and data synthesis. The goal is to mould trainees to become good all-around scientists.

Progression Monitoring and Management

Each trannie is different and progresses on their own time frame and will progress quicker at some things compared to others. The key to progression and management is documenting progress and conversations so progress and success can be tracked over time.

Communication

Being open and honest in the face of mistakes, problems and success is key from both the supervisor and trainee, to ensure that problems can be resolved and successes can be celebrated.

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me:

In a group meeting

At least once per month

In year 1 of PhD study

At least once per week

In year 2 of PhD study

At least once per fortnight

In year 3 of PhD study

At least once per fortnight

The meetings will be face to face and I am usually contactable for a response (if required) on every working day.

Working Pattern

Work in my lab requires being present on site (be it in a laboratory or at a field site) during the core hours of 9 am – 5 pm (or a subset if working part time).

Notice Period for Feedback

I need at least 2 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
