Provision of Training
You will be expected to learn from myself and others in the group initially, so you can become competent in the relevant techniques. After that stage, you will be expected to start developing more independence and creativity as you develop your own project.
Progression Monitoring and Management
I generally work closely with people in my group and I am kept up to date with their goals, timelines, and data. I try to adapt my management style to an individual. There is an expectation that the student will take ownership of their work or develop the skills they need to do this during their PhD.
Communication
Communication is quite flexible and my team communicate be Whatsapp, email, and in person regularly.
PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me:
In a group meeting
At least once per fortnight
In year 1 of PhD study
At least once per month
In year 2 of PhD study
At least once per month
In year 3 of PhD study
At least once per fortnight
These meetings will mainly be face to face, and I am usually contactable for an instant response (if required) on every working day.
Working Patterns
Work in my lab requires being present on site (be it in a laboratory or at a field site) during defined core hours (or a subset if working part time).
Notice Period for Feedback
I need at least 2 weeks’ notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words. This depends on how busy I am.
