Provision of Training
Training is typically provided by technicians, academic staff and external professionals as appropriate. Where relevant, I will take responsibility for your technical training at first, with the expectation that you become more proactive in identifying relevant training opportunities as you progress.
Progression Monitoring and Management
I will set out my expectations of your progression on a frequent basis, and if these progression criteria are not met we will always discuss a plan of action together. As you move through your PhD you will be expected to take greater ownership of your progression but I will always be available when you need help troubleshooting.
Communication
I will discuss the best means of communication for you at the beginning of your PhD (typically face-to-face meetings, Teams and email). I am also happy to discuss any issues that affect your ability to fulfil your potential or our expectations, and where appropriate I will help you to manage any academic deadlines and/or direct you to available support.
PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me:
In a group meeting
At least once per month
In year 1 of PhD study
At least once per week
In year 2 of PhD study
At least once per fortnight
In year 3 of PhD study
At least once per month
These meetings will be a mixture of face to face, via video chat or telephone, and I am usually contactable for an instant response every working day.
Working Patterns
Work in my lab requires being present on site (be it in a laboratory or at a field site) during the core hours of 9 am and 5 pm (or a subset if working part time). However, on occasion, a more flexible work approach may be required (e.g. working after hours/on weekends/away from campus).
Notice Period for Feedback
I need at least 2 weeks' notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
