Scientific Background

Research Interests

My current research interests focus on tackling key freshwater biodiversity and conservation challenges. In particular, I am interested in understanding the patterns and drivers of freshwater biodiversity at different spatial (from local to international) and temporal (seasons to centuries) scales. My research also aims to develop more effective management and conservation practices across a range of freshwater habitats (rivers, ponds, ditches, canals, lakes) within human dominated landscapes. Finally, I have emerging research interests in understanding the socio-political context of urban freshwaters, and how they may contribute to psychological restoration.

Provision of Training

I prefer to take responsibility for your technical training at first, leading to more independence later.

Progression Monitoring and Management

We will have regular meeting to discuss progress and development, and set goals reflecting how the PhD researcher works best (shorter or longer term goals).

Communication

Communication will reflect both the needs of the PhD project and how the researcher works. I have an open door policy, so students can contact me whenever required, and I generally suggest weekly to bi-weekly meetings to discuss their research. I am happy to discuss any issues that are impacting your ability to fulfil your potential or my/our expectations.

Meetings

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per week. These meetings will be a mixture of face-to-face and via video chat or telephone. I am usually contactable for an instant response on every working day.

Work Patterns

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings) I expect students to manage their own time.

Notice Period for Feedback

I need at least 1 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5,000 words.
