Scientific Background

Research Interests

I have a background in Zookeeping, Veterinary Physiotherapy and Zoo consulting. I specialise in the assessment of lameness and pain in different taxonomic groups, and the modification of environment and lifestyle to help reduce musculoskeletal disease in captive species. My current area of research is biomechanics and lameness in Komodo dragons. I also have a keen interest in behavioural challenges in captive species, enrichment and enclosure design.

Provision of Training

Postgraduate research allows you to develop as a independent researcher, with continual support from academics throughout the journey. At this level your time and your project is very much 'owned' and driven by the student, but support is always available when requested and whenever needed.

Progression Monitoring and Management

It is very much reliant on honest and open discussions between student and supporting staff, this will enable supervisors to provide specific and appropriate support as effectively as possible, and help candidates to meet targets.

Communication

I am here to support you throughout your PhD and will be happy to direct you to appropriate services as required. I am contactable via email and Teams and will arrange regular in person meetings on a pre-defined schedule (usually once per month) but I am happy to schedule in supplementary meetings as needed.

Meetings

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per month. These meetings will be a mixture of face-to-face and via video chat or telephone. I am usually contactable for an instant response 3 or 4 days per week.

Work Patterns

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings) I expect students to manage their own time.

Notice Period for Feedback

I need at least 2 weeks' notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5,000 words.
