Scientific Background

Research Interests

I am interested in how children develop in their reading skills, especially understanding reading aloud mechanisms using synchronised eye movements and voice recordings to understand developmental, skilled and neurodiverse reading processes. I am interested in how empirical approaches and findings can inform educational practice and vice versa.

Provision of Training

My approach to training combines structured guidance with increasing independence. I will initially take responsibility for your technical training and the signpost you to courses /training workshops that would be complementary along your PhD.

Progression Monitoring and Management

I will use regular check-ins, milestone-based monitoring, structured reflection, and early intervention where support is needed. Students will be expected to provide regular progress updates, ranging from twice monthly to weekly, depending on the stage and demands of the project.

Communication

My approach to communication is to maintain open, supportive, and responsive communication through regular check-ins, clear expectations, timely feedback, and encouraging students to proactively discuss challenges and progress throughout the project.

Meetings

PhD Students can expect scheduled meetings with me at least once per week. These meetings will be a mixture of face-to-face and via video chat or telephone. I am usually contactable for an instant response on every working day.

Work Patterns

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings) I expect students to manage their own time.

Notice Period for Feedback

I need at least 2 weeks notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5,000 words.
