Research Experience Placements

Due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and the fact that lab space for research activities has been reduced across the partnership, the MIBTP summer research experience programme will be postponed until further notice.
Do you want to:
  • Gain experience in the lab?ug_loading_pcr_machine_5.jpg
  • Find out if a PhD is for you?
  • Explore computational and / or experimental biology?

If yes, then apply for an MIBTP summer research experience placement!

If you are a high-achieving undergraduate in the second year of your degree (middle years if on longer programmes) who is enthusiastic about bioscience, we want to hear from you! We have funded research placements available during the summer holiday to enable students doing basic science (biology, chemistry, maths, computer science, biomedicine etc.) or veterinary degrees to work in a modern research group.

The Research Experience Placement (REP) scheme is designed to give promising undergraduates at UK universities a first-hand opportunity to experience research in a UK laboratory and to encourage them to consider a career in bioscience research. The placements are particularly designed for students who wish to find out about their suitability and aptitude for a research career.

Projects offered at MIBTP partner universities will be in the same themes as the PhD research opportunities.

If you wish to apply for a placement, please contact potential supervisors directly. You might start by looking at the supervisors and projects listed under the PhD study tab above to see what interests you before you go to separate University and Department staff pages.

If you need advice you can contact the relevant MIBTP Director indicating which area of research you are interested in. Once you have found a supervisor willing to host you, please fill in the REP application form.

Students will be required to submit a post-REP report to BBSRC within three months of the placement. Template forms and guidance will be provided.

Student eligibility

To be eligible for a REP, undergraduate students need to be:

  • In the middle years of their first degree studies
  • Registered for a basic science (including mathematics and engineering) or veterinary degree at a UK university
  • Expected to obtain a first or upper second class UK honours degree

REP Duration

Each REP is for approx 6 weeks during the summer vacation in the UK.

      Support costs

The value of a REP is £3,000. Students will be paid at a minimum level of the National Living Wage per week and a contribution will be made towards research expenses during the placement.

      Student testimonial

"The MIBTP was a fantastic experience giving me skills and confidence in the lab and in data analysis, I also developed great working relationships with others in the lab, developing my transferable skills like communication, teamwork and problem-solving. To summarise I believe this scheme to be an excellent opportunity for undergraduates and I am very grateful that I was able to undertake my summer internship."
