Biography

Ben was born in 1991 and grew up in the South East of Essex. He attended SEEVIC College before attending the University of Warwick where he has been since 2009. During the course of his degree Ben spent three months working for the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), in the nanobioengineering group under the direction of Mateu Pla Roca, on portable point of care diagnostics. In 2013 Ben gained his Master of Chemistry (Mchem) degree after working for Dr G. Costantini looking at molecular self-assembly on surfaces using scanning tunnelling microscopy. Following this Ben commenced his Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr M.I.Gibson, and is funded by the EPSRC. Outside of work Ben enjoys rock-climbing, cycling and running.

Research interests

Bens research interests lie in metabolic glycan labelling. Other research interests include the development of heterogeneous multivalent glycoenviroments for probing carbohydrate-lectin interactions.

Outreach

Ben often participates in the Warwick Outreach programme lead by Mr Nick Barker, working with school groups from ages 9 to 16. Examples of outreach events Ben has helped with are:

  • Worked with AS-Level students on an undergraduate-level experiment while discussing higher education and answering any questions they had.
  • Assiting 45 Year 5 students from Courthouse Green school to perform 3 experiments in our undergraduate teaching labs.
  • Visiting Alderman's Green Community Primary School with Nick Barker to give an assembly to years 5 and 6, including a presentation on "Why I am a scientist".
  • Helping GCSE students perform experiments in the undergraduate teaching labs and discussing potential A-Level options with them.
