Gibson Group: Matthew Warren

Biography

Matt was born in Sussex, where he attended school and sixth form college before starting undergraduate studies at the University of Durham. He graduated from Durham in 2018 with a first-class degree in Natural Sciences, focussing on the biosciences and organic chemistry.

Following this, Matt joined the Medical Research Council Doctoral Training Partnership (MRC DTP) in Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research at the University of Warwick. In the first year of the course, Matt undertook two three-month mini-projects: the first investigated novel cryoprotectants in non-extremophile bacteria under the supervision of Professor Gibson; the second project, supervised by Dr Gabriele Sosso, developed machine learning models to unravel structure-activity relationships in ice recrystallisation inhibitors.

Matt began his PhD in 2019 under the joint supervision of Dr Sosso and Professor Gibson. Building on the work from the mini-projects, this project seeks to fuse computational and experimental studies of ice recrystallisation inhibitors to enable the design of new, highly active cryoprotectants.
