Metallomesogens
We have published many papers in the area of metal containing liquid crystals (metallomesogens) over the years, and still maintain an active interest in the area. See publications 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 15 for more details.
Below are some photographs of liquid crystal phase textures.
A smectic A phase showing both homeotropic (black) and focal conic regions. |

The same sample (as above) cooled into the smectic C phase. What was homeotropic is now schlieren, what was focal conic now exhibits a focal conic smectic C texture. |
