Supervisory and management team

Alberto Guadagnini

Prof. Alberto Guadagnini

I am full Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at Politecnico di Milano since 2003 and Director of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering since 2017. I am adjunct Professor at the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences of the University of Arizona (USA). My main research activity is related to qualitative and quantitative aspects of groundwater systems and underground energy resources. I had key roles in EU framework projects, and PI of numerous research projects funded by the industrial sector. I am chair of the Communication Committee of the International Society for Porous Media (Interpore), chair of the Committee on Groundwater Hydraulics and Management of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR), and editor of multiple scientific journals in hydrology. I received the Chaire Gutenberg and Prix Gutenberg 2018 award for research on Climate change and water cycle in Upper Rhine Basin. I was elected member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (2021).

Dr. Mohaddeseh Mousavi Nezhad

Dr. Mohaddeseh Mousavi Nezhad is Associate Professor in Computational Mechanics and Data Science in the School of Engineering of University of Warwick. She received her PhD from the University of Exeter in 2010. Her doctoral research project was on stochastic modelling of transport process in heterogeneous porous media. After her PhD, she joined the computational mechanics group in the University of Glasgow as an associate research fellow for a project funded by EDF Energy. She is member of Warwick Centre for Predictive Modelling (WCPM) and leads the PMPM research group. Her research focuses on modelling flow and transport in heterogeneous deformable porous materials.

Patrick Jacobs

Dr. Patrick Jacobs

Patrick Jacobs holds the position of a Technical Director at TAUW Germany. In this role it is his responsibility to spearhead the company's efforts in optimizing business operations in the field of environmental consultancy and sustainability. His further responsibilities revolve around performing research and analysis to determine the best operational practices both on the company level and on the group level as a part of the company’s European expert board. Since 2011 Dr. Jacobs has been a senior project manager and consultant for national and international customers in the context of long-term and complex environmental remediation projects. These have comprised soil projects including, site investigation, monitoring, risk assessment and remediation for multinational industry customers in Germany, Brazil and Austria (chemical, mining, automotive, food industries) as well as large-scale system analyses and evaluations of surface water systems and the associated land ecosystems with a focus on sediments and contaminant transport and fate related to the EU Water Framework Directive.

Dr. Giovanni Porta

I am a researcher in the field of civil and environmental engineering with expertise in contaminant transport, fluid mechanics, porous media, data analysis and numerical methods. In my research I develop and apply quantitative models to improve our current understanding of flow and transport processes in porous media. Specific research topics include characterization of contaminant transport in soil and aquifers, reactive transport, probabilistic risk assessment, uncertainty quantification of large-scale geological models.

Monica Riva

Prof. Monica Riva

I am Full Professor at the Politecnico di Milano (Italy), Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Adjunct Professor at the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources of the University of Arizona (USA). I received my Ph.D. in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering from PoliMi in 2000. I have been visiting Professor in several Universities and Research Centers, including the University of Arizona, the University of Strasbourg and the CNRS (France). My research activity has been focused mainly on subsurface flow and transport dynamics, stochastic groundwater hydrology, probabilistic well protection zones, scaling in hydrology and model parameter estimation, uncertainty quantification, multiphase flows and groundwater management. I serve as Elected Member of the Council of InterPore (International Society for Porous Media). I am Deputy Coordinator of the Doctoral Program in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering at PoliMi and Rector Delegate for International Networks at PoliMi.
