REMEDI EngFest 2024

REMEDI at the International Festival of Engineering in Milan, IT

The REMEDI ITN was present at the Festival Internazionale dell’Ingegneria, organised by the Polytechnic University of Milan and hosted at the cutting-edge Milan Bovisa campus.

This event brought together researchers from various engineering fields and non-academic audiences, ranging from young kids and teens to adults, to highlight the groundbreaking work being done at the Polytechnic and beyond. As part of the festival, REMEDI delivered a thought-provoking lecture and presentation on the environmental impact of pharmaceuticals, inviting attendees to engage in an interactive exploration of sustainable solutions.

REMEDI’s mission to train and inspire the next generation of engineers moves forward, with this dissemination activity reaching kids, teens, and adults alike. The enthusiastic reception and feedback from the audience paves the way for further similar outreach events, including more engagement with schools. REMEDI’s participation was a joint collaboration of DICA and the MiPore research group with the industrial partners TAUW Germany and Lario Reti Holding, whose experience and support were invaluable for the success of the activity.

REMEDI Science School: Advances in Reactive Transport in Milan, IT

REMEDI proudly continues its commitment to advanced education with the second Science School, the course "Modern Views on Crystal Dissolution, Growth, and Consequences for Reactive Transport". Led by the distinguished Professor Andreas Lüttge, this week-long intensive course aimed to deepen the ESRs’ understanding of reactive transport processes, focusing on crystal dissolution and growth mechanisms. The course was hosted by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DICA) of the Polytechnic University of Milan.

By engaging in this specialized curriculum, the ESRs gained valuable insights into cutting-edge modelling tools essential for addressing complex challenges in reactive transport, such as Kinetic Monte Carlo. The course not only enhanced their technical expertise but also reinforced REMEDI's ongoing efforts to provide rigorous, interdisciplinary training opportunities for its researchers.

REMEDI TSTC4: Science Diplomacy for Researchers course in Milan, IT

In a bold start to 2024, REMEDI ITN proudly announces its active engagement with the course: "Science Diplomacy for Researchers. Filling the Gap between Science and Policy within the Global Challenges". Hosted by Politecnico di Milano at the elegant Fondazione Gianfranco Ferrè in Milan, the course marks a significant milestone as one of the first of its kind in Italy.

Covering the increasingly relevant topic of science diplomacy, the week-long intensive course spans economy, policy, and engineering. Ashfeen (ESR5), Milad (ESR4), and Stefano (ESR2) from REMEDI ITN were active participants, enriching their perspectives with valuable insights from the diverse curriculum.

The event's location at Fondazione Gianfranco Ferrè provided a stunning backdrop for this pioneering course, reflecting REMEDI ITN's commitment to fostering interdisciplinary learning experiences. As the first event of the year, TSTC4 sets the tone for REMEDI's continued dedication to cutting-edge education and collaboration in 2024


Venaria 2023

REMEDI Summer School: visit to TAUW remediation site in Venaria Reale, IT

Exciting news! Our ESRs recently visited a TAUW active remediation site in Venaria Reale, IT. This field course allowed them to learn straight from industry professionals and gain a deeper understanding of active remediation dynamics.

During the visit, our ESRs observed and engaged in field work, witnessing the practical aspects of managing active remediation projects firsthand. The experience enriched their knowledge and enhanced their expertise in addressing emerging contaminants.

We extend our gratitude to TAUW for opening their doors and providing this invaluable opportunity. The collaboration between academia and industry is crucial in bridging the gap between theory and practice, and this visit exemplified the importance of experiential learning in preparing our ESRs for future challenges, both in academia and industry.

REMEDI Summer School: TAUW Soil Seminar, IT

We are thrilled to share an update on the first REMEDI Summer School, which took place at Politecnico di Milano in collaboration with TAUW. This event provided a unique opportunity for the REMEDI ESRs to network with industry professionals from TAUW and gain valuable insights from their remediation activities and industrial research.

Through engaging Soil Seminars organized by TAUW employees, the ESRs had the privilege of learning firsthand about the latest developments and innovative approaches in soil remediation.

The event served as a platform for meaningful discussions and interactive sessions, where the ESRs had the opportunity to share their research findings and receive valuable feedback from industry experts.

REMEDI TSTC3: "REMEDI seen from a stakeholder's perspective” workshop, UK

Congratulations to the REMEDI team on the successful Transferrable Skills Training Course 3: "REMEDI seen from a stakeholder's perspective"! The workshop, organized by the Warwick team, featured distinguished speakers and insightful talks from REMEDI ESRs.

Esteemed speakers such as Dr. Komali Kantamaneni, Dr. Reza Zolfaghari, and Dr. Caroline Samberger shared their expertise on stakeholder engagement, from academia, to industry, to policymakers. The REMEDI ESRs also presented their experiences working with industrial partners, highlighting the practical implications of their research.

We commend the Warwick team for their organization of the workshop, which fostered interdisciplinary collaboration and equipped REMEDI ESRs with valuable transferrable skills.


REMEDI Interpore

REMEDI at Interpore 2023 in Edinburgh, UK

We are delighted to celebrate the presence of the REMEDI team at the Interpore 2023 international conference in Edinburgh, Scotland!

The conference provided an interdisciplinary and engaging platform for our ESRs to share their research. They delivered talks and presented posters, showcasing their innovative work in the field of porous media research. Their contributions demonstrated the dedication and expertise of the REMEDI team in tackling emerging contaminants and advancing the understanding of porous media processes.

We would also like to commend Dr. Mohaddeseh Mousavi Nezhad for her contribution to the conference as the head of the evaluation committee for the conference's academic posters. Her experience and guidance have contributed to the recognition of outstanding research in the field and in supporting academic excellence.

Bioazul ESR1

March-May 2023
Field work on sustainable water reutilization in Malaga, ES

Congratulations to ESR1 Negar Razaghi on the successful completion of her secondment in Bioazul SL, a leading company in Malaga (ES) specializing in sustainable water use solutions!

During the secondment, Negar immersed herself in the study of commonly employed technologies for water and wastewater treatment, alongside innovative strategies for water reutilization. Also, she gained practical knowledge during a field visit to Bioazul's testing site, and developed numerical models for specific types of water treatment solutions to promote it towards sustainability. Her work contributed to Bioazul’s development of sustainable practices for water reutilization and clean water.

Congratulations to Prof. Alberto Guadagnini, head of the REMEDI ITN, on delivering a lecture at the UKACM 2023 conference hosted at the University of Warwick!

Outreach to industry professionals at Lario Reti Holding, IT

Congratulations to Stefano Seccia (ESR2) for delivering a lecture to industry professionals at Lario Reti Holding (IT) on emerging contaminants!

The lecture covered the increasing relevance of emerging contaminants for water service providers, and highlighted existing and future remediation strategies, furthering REMEDI’s aim of communicating novel topics to a non-academic audience and disseminating knowledge and awareness on emerging contaminants.

REMEDI Midterm meeting

We are excited to report that the first meetup of the entire REMEDI ITN has taken place in Milan, IT!

The meetup provided a valuable opportunity for ESRs and the supervisory team to share ideas and objectives, as well as discuss future avenues of research in the field of emerging contaminants. The stunning facilities of the Polytechnic University of Milan provided the perfect backdrop for these discussions, and we are thrilled to see such productive and engaging conversations taking place.

We are proud to continue with our mission to train the next generation of researchers in the field of emerging contaminants, and we look forward to seeing the outcomes of these discussions in the future.

Turbulent Flow and Mixing in Porous Media workshop at UoW, UK

Congratulations to Dr. Mohaddeseh Mousavi Nezhad and the rest of the PMPM research group for hosting the workshop “Turbulent Flow and Mixing in Porous Media”!

Hosting distinguished speakers including Dr. Giovanni Michele Porta, from PoliMi, and Dr. Tim Schöne, from Tauw, the workshop brought scientists together from different backgrounds to discuss the state of the art in turbulent flow and mixing in porous media, and its present and future applications.

TSTC1: Advanced Skills course in Milan, IT

The first in-person meetup of the ESRs since the start of the project has been in Milan, to undertake the first ITN training activity: the first Transferable Skills Training Course (TSTC) “Advanced Interaction Skills for Academic Professionals”!

Taught by the expert entourage of Prof. Hans de Bruijn (Delft University of Technology, NL) and professional actor Rose Drenth, the ESRs had the opportunity to work on transferrable skills such as interviewing, debating, pitching, and negotiating, as well as networking with fellow PhD colleagues from the Polytechnic University of Milan.

REMEDI MSCA-ITN-EID Kick-off online meeting

We are thrilled to announce that the kick-off meeting of the REMEDI ITN project has taken place! With the planning of project activities and the recruitment of Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) well underway, the project is now ready to begin its exciting journey.

During the meeting, project coordinators, supervisors, and partners came together to outline research areas, establish collaboration strategies, and set key milestones. The dedication and enthusiasm displayed reflect our collective commitment to addressing emerging contaminants in natural waters.
