Assessing the potential of Fe containing (geo)materials as filter-stable sorbent materials for removal of Iodinated Contrast Media (ICM)

River 4 - Val di Fumo

PMPM

Pharmaceuticals are recognised as water contaminants of emerging concern due to their pervasiveness and potential to have negative ecological effects. Among pharmaceuticals, Iodinated X-ray Contrast Media agents (ICMs) which are used in elevated doses for medical imaging purposes, are resistant to conventional biological wastewater treatments. The REMEDI ESR1 project scheme is a part of REMEDI project that target the area of capturing and removal of Iodinated X-ray Contrast Media agents (ICMs) from the water resources. Negar Razaghi fulfills the duties of ESR1 for the REMEDI Project.

Negar’s research is primarily focused on pore-scale analysis of the pollutant transport and its removal from the water resources based on sorption process. She collaborates with the Porous Materials and Processes Modelling (PMPM) Research Group within the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick.

Negar will conduct research on experimental hydrology and water/wastewater treatment to alleviate or entirely remove polluting compounds from water resources and stream sediments. Consequently, fluid flow containing contaminants within the porous structures will be explored with a focus on efficient and optimised pollutants removal including characterisation of the kinetic behaviour involved in the process. Additionally, the impacts of environmental factors on the process of water treatment will be assessed.

Some secondments with industrial partners in Germany, Italy, and Spain are also envisaged for ESR1 to guarantee an application-oriented perspective on REMEDI research and maximise ESR's acquaintance with the non-academic sector.
