Within the REMEDI Project, Angeliki Koupa is ESR3 and her field of study in this project is the reactive transport of the contaminants (Iodinated Contrast Media agents, ICMs) in porous media.

ESR3 will test and apply the REMEDI system in industrial drainage pipes draining a pharmaceutical production industry wastewater containing iodinated contrast media agents (ICMs) in Italy (in collaboration with ESR5); derive hydrological criteria for the design of ICM-removal system (with ESR 1,4); and investigate the bonding of ICMs within REMEDI system and monitoring transformations upon exposure to different engineering conditions (with ESR2). These will be done through simulation of biogeochemical cycles. Then, the dosage of these Fe-containing minerals required for trapping ICM will be established using data from the projects of ESR1&2.

Secondments will be carried out with non-academic partners in Bioazul (Spain) and Lario Reti (Italy) to improve and deepen the research outlook using a multidisciplinary approach: 1. Development of stochastic models based on understanding the processes controlling ICM dynamics, during reduction of ICM-containing Fe0 oxides; 2. Investigation and development of new technologies to retain and recover ICM containing Fe phases in porous filters.
